Fort Belmont opening Memorial Day

Fort Belmont will be opening for the summer season on Monday, May 28th. We hope you will stop by, say hello and take a tour to learn about the history of our area. Recent donations include old grist mill stones, remnants of a pioneer village called Brownsburg, just a few miles northwest of Jackson. The stones were donated by John Lilleberg, Sr. His great-grandfather, Ole Lilleberg, helped build the Brown and Company Mill along the banks of the Des Moines River. Originally in 1870 when completed, it served as a saw mill and was later converted to a grist mill. The grist mill closed sometime around 1907. Today, nothing of the village of Brownsburg remains. The unearthing of the 4 mill stones and spindles was indeed an exciting find for the Lillebergs and local historians.
